Botanical Gardens
In 1846 the gardens were opened were opened to provide a nice green space for Melbournians. Later in 1857 a new director Ferdinand von Meuller moved in and brought in many new plants making the garden more popular. In 1873 William Guilfoyle became Director and changed the style of the Gardens to something more like the picturesque gardens that were around at that time. He added tropical and temperate plants such as the collection of the tropical glass house. The botanical gardens were especially popular because it gave the working class a nice place to relax and play because it was free. Going to church was an important part of life in the early 1900's, with nearly 100% of people identifying as Christian. There were many types of Christianity, the most popular being Anglican but there was a strong Catholic presence. There were other types but they were less dominant, although you can still find orthodox and Presbyterian churches in Melbourne. Church usually began at 10 and finished at 12 noon but some services were held on Saturdays. Churches played a larger role then and effected nearly everyone.
